Aroha is the name of this exciting renovation project for a women’s retreat, and it holds special significance. “Aroha” in Maori represents love, compassion, and empathy, capturing the spirit of the retreat perfectly. This project, led by our clients from New Zealand, will be a sanctuary that welcomes both women and men, with a design that fosters personal growth, relaxation, and connection to nature.

In collaboration with Utama Architect, we are transforming an old, white villa into a space filled with warmth, inviting earthy tones, and influences from both Mediterranean and Indonesian design. Our focus on gender-neutral spaces ensures that every guest feels safe, comfortable, and engaged with the culture of the surrounding environment.

A key part of the design strategy is our commitment to sourcing local materials and incorporating Indonesian craftsmanship. From ironwood to traditional handmade decorative pieces, each material tells a story and strengthens the connection to the local culture. These elements are complemented by Mediterranean-inspired tones and antique accents, resulting in a refined, yet culturally rich atmosphere.

The retreat consists of nine spacious bedrooms, each with a generous en suite bathroom designed with beauty and tranquility in mind. The materials in the bathrooms create a soothing environment, with a design that feels luxurious yet grounded. Our choice of materials is intentional, offering a warm and welcoming feeling that will resonate with guests, providing a true home-away-from-home experience.

The wellness area is a key component of Aroha, with an emphasis on barefoot luxury. Using unexpected materials like dark wood, onyx, and dark bronze sanitary fixtures, we’re creating a space that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation. This area will be central to the overall retreat experience, designed to nurture the mind, body, and soul.

We are also focused on seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. The layout is intended to connect guests with the surrounding nature, allowing them to experience the serenity of the jungle while enjoying the comforts of the retreat.

This is our client’s second retreat, following the success of Escape Heaven, a well-regarded retreat in Bali known for its exceptional service and award-winning experiences.
